On Saturday 4th October a team of 8 Borderlands members headed north to compete at the Reorg Fall Open in Stoke-on-Trent, walking away with 14 medals between us. With over 500 competitors, the event is one of the UK’s biggest charity Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitions.
A Competition with a Cause
The Reorg Open brings together competitors from across the country to support Reorg, a UK charity that uses Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and functional fitness to help military veterans, serving personnel, and emergency service workers.
With over 500 competitors in attendance, the event combines high-level competition with a friendly, supportive atmosphere — and it was the perfect platform for our team to get started with competing.
First-Time Competitors, Big Achievements
We sent seven students, alongside our Head Coach, Owain Williams, to the event. For many, this was their first ever competition, and everyone performed brilliantly.
Each and every student gave everything they had on the mats and faced some incredibly tough competition across the board - we are incredibly proud of all of them. In total we earned 8 gold medals, 4 silver, and 2 bronze, an huge achievement for a club that’s only just over a year old.
“This event was a fantastic experience for everyone,” said Owain Williams, Founder and Head Coach at Borderlands Grappling. “Win or lose, I felt immense pride watching our students step onto the mats. The results are just a reflection of the hard work and commitment they’ve shown over the past year.”
A first time for coach too
Owain also competed for the first time at black belt, taking gold in both gi and no-gi divisions, and silver in the no-gi absolute category.
“I’ve always enjoyed Reorg events,” added Williams. “They’re well-run, have a great atmosphere, strong competition, and support an amazing cause — the perfect place for our students to start competing.”
A Growing, Inclusive Community
Borderlands Grappling has grown into a welcoming, inclusive community over the past year, where people of all backgrounds can learn, challenge themselves, and make friends through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The weekend at Reorg was a fantastic showcase of our members’ dedication, courage, and team spirit.
