Borderlands Grappling students put on the gi for the first time earlier this month with the launch of our new BJJ program.

A new year always signifies a new beginning and it was no different at Borderlands Grappling as we rolled into 2025. On the 6th January new and existing students pulled on their gis (the special jacket and trousers worn during Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) to try a new type of grappling for the first time. Until this year Borderlands classes were exclusively 'no gi', meaning participants would wear suitable sports clothing such as t-shirt and shorts to train in. These classes would see a range of techniques taught pulling from various styles including Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, wrestling and judo.

Our gi classes have launched in addition to our already popular no gi program.

Why the gi?

There are plenty of similarities to gi and no gi grappling, with a huge range of techniques being applicable in both disciplines. The launch of our gi programs gives students the ability to learn new takedowns, submissions and sweeps that require a grip on the opponents clothing. Training in the gi also unlocks the ability to earn belts - helping students measure their progres throughout their grappling journey.
