Ever considered starting martial arts in Ludlow? Borderlands Grappling may just be what you are looking for.

From Ludlow Food Festival and Ludlow Fringe to its stunning architecture and historical significance, there is a lot to love about Ludlow. Yet for those of us who call Ludlow and its surrounding areas home, it can seem like there is little to do - especially when it comes to being active.

In this guide, we aim to highlight some of the martial arts options in Ludlow.

Martial arts in Ludlow: What's available?

It would be remiss of us to suggest that Borderlands Grappling is unique in offering martial arts classes in Ludlow. In fact, there are several great options to choose from, including:

  • Borderlands Grappling

  • Ludlow Judo Club

  • Freestyle Martial Arts

  • Ludlow Boxing Club (not technically classified as a martial art - but worthy of a spot)

As well as several other specialist martial arts groups including Karate, Taekwondo and Aikido.

Why start training martial arts in Ludlow?

Every martial arts class available in Ludlow offers a different mix of benefits, including:

  • Fitness/weight loss/improved coordination

  • Self-defence

  • A sense of community

  • Confidence building

  • Mental wellbeing

  • Discipling building

  • Stress release

  • Resilience when faced with adversity

  • Cool t-shirts (although that may just be Borderlands)

Of course, we may be biased, but at Borderlands Grappling we believe that we offer all of these benefits to a high level.

Selecting the best martial arts class for you

Not every martial arts class is right for everyone. Here are a few questions you can ask yourself when seeking out the best martial arts class for you:

What do I want to achieve?

For example, if your goal is mostly to improve your fitness a martial art such as grappling with its high intensity sparring could be the best option for you. Alternatively, if you want to focus more on discipline and belt progression, a more traditional martial art where you follow katas may suit you better.

How physical do I want to be?

Different martial arts will require different levels of physicality. Some martial arts, although good for your fitness, can be very low physically. Typically martial arts such as Tai Chi fit into this category. Other martial arts, such as grappling can be very physical, although any good grappling gym will ensure that everyone is practicing to a level that is safe and comfortable for them.

How good is the instructor?

A good instructor can make a huge difference to your martial arts experience. Here are a few things you can ask to understand how good an instructor may be:

  • How long have they been training in the martial art?

  • How long have they been teaching?

  • What qualifications do they have to teach?

  • What do their students say about them?

  • What checks and verifications do they hold?

One thing that is very important to remember is:

Being good at a martial art does not necessarily make for a good instructor.

This is why it is important to consider both technical ability as well as coaching experience and personality when deciding which martial arts class is right for you.

What works for me?

Although you will want to find the best class and instructor possible, you also need to consider your individual needs. Whether class times work for your schedule and how easy the school is to get to can have a big impact on whether you are able to commit long term to learning a martial art.
