Just over a year after starting Borderlands Grappling, we launched our first ever student survey. The goal of this survey was to get a measure of what people are satisfied/unsatisfied with at Borderlands and get thoughts and opinions on what they want to see in the next 12 months.
Although it would be easy to take these results and use them internally, we believe in transparency at Borderlands and want to be honest about what we are good at and where we can improve. Below you can find an overview of our survey results.
Our Net Promoter Score (NPS)

A NPS is widely used to calculate how likely a 'customer' is to recommend a company to others. It measures customer loyalty and satisfaction on a scale of -100 to +100. Although it shouldn't be used in isolation, it does help us understand how well we are performing as a grappling club.
Our current NPS is +85.
In a guide to NPS, SurveyMonkey notes that a score ranging from 0 to 30 is considered 'good', a score above 50 is considered 'excellent' and a score above 70 is considered 'world class'. We are extremely pleased with our rating. However, this won't make us complacent - we can't wait to work on improving this score in the coming years.
How are people hearing about Borderlands?

There is a fairly even split when it comes to how people discover Borderlands Grappling. The top 3 include:
Facebook (35%)
A recommendation from a friend (30%)
Google (30%)
What does that mean?
It's amazing to see that so many students find us via a recommendation from a friend, it's a testament to the community we have built here at Borderlands Grappling. It is also good to see that the time we put into creating content on our website and on Facebook is helping us find new students. Over the next year, we plan on doubling down on what works and also looking to increase our exposure through other social media platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and dare I say it....TikTok.
Why do our students train?

There was a broad range of responses to this question. This was a multi choice question with participants being asked to select up to 3 reasons. Our top three results included:
To learn something new (95%)
To get fit (80%)
Stress relief & meet like-minded people (both 55%)
What does that mean?
You could argue that people like grappling because it offers benefits for the mind (learn something new), body (get fit) and soul (stress relief). Over the next year, we will bear these results in mind when planning our syllabus.
How good is the coaching at Borderlands?

Students reported being very satisfied (5%) or extremely satisfied (95%) with the coaching at Borderlands. Some comments mentioned how happy people are with the level of coaching and how they feel it is a major contributor to their growth. There were also some helpful comments around offering more bite-sized demonstrations for newbies and how training in a class can be difficult for new students.
What does that mean?
We know that our level of coaching is what helps Borderlands stand out from the crowd. Although the results to this question were excellent, we won't let this get to our heads. Over the next year we will continue to develop the coaching staff and work on our training processes.
Although we are currently limited to offering a dedicated beginners course, we will look for ways to make it easier for newbies to get up to speed with the essentials.
What do people think of the community at Borderlands?

Community is very important to us at Borderlands. So, we were very pleased to see that students reported being very satisfied (12%) or extremely satisfied (88%) with the club community. Some reported that the Borderlands community is what keeps them coming back every week and that they felt safe and supported in the space.
What does this mean?
Again, we are really happy to see the high rating around our community - we are very proud of what we have collectively built at Borderlands. Over the next year, we will continue to focus on how we can facilitate an even stronger community.
What are people saying about our facilities?

There was a slightly larger spread of opinions on our current facilities with 15% reporting being satisfied, 60% reporting being very satisfied and 25% reporting being extremely satisfied with the training facilities.
What does this mean?
We are glad to see that students are generally satisfied with the fascilities at Borderlands Grappling, although we recognise that it is an area we can improve. We have already developed a plan for investing in our facilities over the next year and are looking forward to following through on it.
What do students want to see in the next 12 months?

There was a great split on what students want to see happening at Borderlands over the next 12 months. The top three responses included:
More no gi classes (45%)
Open mats + gi classes (both 40%)
Better training facilities & more interclub competitions (both 35%)
What does this mean?
Although we are limited by several factors we are already looking for ways to put on more classes and open mats at Borderlands. We are also planning our next interclub and have a plan for investing in training facilities.
