Danny is an Assistant Coach here at Boarderlands Grappling. This means he supports the Head Coach in regular classes and occasionally leads full sessions on his own. Danny's attention to detail, experience in BJJ and approachable nature make him an absolutely essential part of the Boarderlands team.
We had the chance to sit down with Danny and get his thoughts on grappling, Borderlands and his plans for the future. Here is what he had to say.
How long have you been training in grappling and BJJ?
I've been doing different martial arts since I was around 9 years old but grappling is the martial art I have been most consistent at. I've been training grappling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu up to 7 hours a week for 2 years now.
What is it about grappling that keeps you consistently training and competing?
I love the buzz of competing. This is especially true when you have a group from likeminded competitors going to the same competition - it really gives it that family vibe!

How did you get into coaching at Borderlands?
Coaching is always something I've wanted to get into. A big part of this is because I knew it would help me coach my son in jiu jitsu when he's ready.
I got into coaching at Borderlands purely by supporting Owain. He's given me a lot of time and helped me when I needed it throughout my grappling journey so far, so when he told me his ideas I was more than happy to jump on board.
Why do you love (or indeed hate) training and coaching at Borderlands?
I love the variety of people we get at Borderlands.
From day 1 the classes have been filled with everyone from total beginners, to people who have trained for years but lost the love for it. I love training and coaching both, but there is something special about being part of the reason someone's love for grappling has been reignited.
I also enjoy helping make it fun and engaging to get fit.
If you could start your BJJ journey again, what would you do differently (if anything)?
Good question. I certainly don't regret anything, but if I started again I'd fully commit early on. I spent the first 6 months doing 1 - 2 hours a week until I finally got the bug for it. Now I am training anything up 7 hours a week and my progress has increased exponentially.
What are your plans/hopes/dreams for your future in grappling?
In years to come I'd like to achieve my black belt in grappling, this takes so much dedication and time but it's so worthwhile.
I aim to still compete, but more so be at competitions to support some of the newer guys and girls get on those comp mats.
