At Borderlands Grappling, we believe that the mat is more than just a place to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu; it’s a place where young athletes build character, resilience, and lifelong friendships. To ensure our Juniors and Minis get the most out of every session, we’ve formalized our kids’ code of conduct.
This isn't just a list of "dos and don’ts"—it’s the foundation of a safe, high-energy, and inclusive environment. Here is a breakdown of why these standards matter for our young grapplers:
1. Safety and hygiene first
In a contact sport like BJJ, safety is our top priority. Our code emphasizes keeping fingernails trimmed, wearing clean gear, and following instructor guidance to the letter. These habits protect everyone on the mat and teach children the importance of personal responsibility.
2. The power of respect
Respect is a "golden rule" of our academy.
We expect our students to show respect to their instructors, their teammates, and—most importantly—themselves. This includes:
Listening when a coach is speaking.
The "tap" rule: Understanding that when a partner taps, we stop immediately. This builds trust between training partners.
Good sportsmanship: Winning with humility and losing with grace.
3. A bully-free zone
We have a zero-tolerance policy for bullying or exclusion. At Borderlands, we are a team. Our Code of Conduct ensures that every child, regardless of their skill level or background, feels welcome and supported.
Why it works
By setting clear expectations, we allow kids to focus on the fun parts: the sweeps, the submissions, and the "live" training. When everyone knows the rules, the confidence in the room soars.
We encourage all parents to review the full Code of Conduct with their children. Let’s work together to keep Borderlands Grappling the best place in Ludlow for kids to learn martial arts.
