Craig is one of our most committed students here at Boardlands Grappling. He has been training with us since our first few classes and has now become an integral part of our brilliant community - attending all of our gi classes and no gi classes every week.
He has embraced the grappling lifestyle fully, taking part in an interclub competition at the end of 2024 and will be attending his first seminar next month.
Craig's positive attitude is infectious and he is always one of the first to welcome newbies onto the mats and help them get to grips with the basics. I got the chance to ask Craig about his grappling journey so far.
How long have you been training at Borderlands?
My first session at Borderlands was Wednesday July 3rd. Since then I have been training consistently at the gym for three sessions a week, except during a period of injury.
What experience did you have in martial arts/grappling/fitness before then?
I had done BJJ for around 3 months previously with another grappling school and regularly go to the gym to lift weights.
What is it about grappling that you love and keeps you showing up to every session?

Every session I learn something new and get a little bit better at the techniques. The process becomes addictive over time as you always want to know more and more. I also love that in every session I feel like my fitness levels are getting a little bit better.
You recently dealt with a (non-grappling related) injury, how did you find the recovery process and having to take time off the mats?
Taking time away from BJJ has been incredibly hard. Grappling has become possibly my favourite thing to do in my spare time and not training due to an ankle injury has been very difficult to deal with - I can't wait to get back on the mats.
What advice would you give someone just getting started with their grappling journey?
Turn up with an open mind and no preconceptions. It may seem scary or daunting at first, but it'll probably be one of the best decisions you'll ever make.
What are your plans/hopes/dreams for the future of your grappling journey?
I hope to make training grappling and Jiu-jitsu a permanent part of my life, I would compete again as I really enjoyed the interclub I took part in late last year. I've now been training in the gi for six months and I'm enjoying working towards my blue belt.
